The first frame of your video is drawn onto the canvas the moment it loads, so you are cropping against the real picture rather than guessing at coordinates.
There are two ways to set the crop. Drag the handles on the preview to draw the region by eye, with a rule-of-thirds grid appearing while you drag to help you line up the shot, or type exact X, Y, width and height values into the pixel fields when you need precision. Pick an aspect ratio preset first and the frame locks to that shape as you resize, so a 9:16 crop stays perfectly vertical. The live readout always shows the exact output size, rounded to even numbers because the H.264 codec requires it.
Cropping only re-encodes the video, and only the pixels you keep. The area inside the frame is not scaled or stretched, so it stays exactly as sharp as the original, while the audio track is copied across untouched. That makes cropping close to lossless for the part of the picture you care about.
