M4V is Apple's variation on MP4, used by iTunes, the Apple TV app and various Apple export presets. Structurally the two are nearly the same file: both are ISO base media containers holding H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio. The difference is largely the extension and a few Apple-specific metadata conventions.
That similarity is cold comfort when software refuses the file on the extension alone. Plenty of video editors, upload forms, Android phones and smart TVs check for ".mp4" and reject anything else without ever looking inside. Renaming the file by hand sometimes works and sometimes produces a file with mismatched metadata, which is why a proper remux is the safer route.
