How to Rotate a Video Online for Free

  1. Load your video

Drop a video file onto the page or click Select Video. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and other common formats are supported. A preview of the video loads immediately.

  2. Choose rotation or flip

Click 90 Left, 90 Right or 180 to rotate, or Horizontal or Vertical to flip. The preview updates so you can see the result before processing.

  3. Select a processing mode

Fast mode applies the rotation via metadata and finishes instantly with no quality loss when the output container supports rotation metadata (e.g. MP4, MOV). For formats that do not support rotation metadata (e.g. WebM, MKV), use Compatible mode instead. Compatible mode re-encodes the video so the rotation is baked in and plays correctly on every device and player.

  4. Apply and download

Click Apply Rotation. When processing completes, download the corrected video.

Fast vs Compatible Mode

Fast mode sets a metadata flag that tells video players to display the rotated orientation. The video data itself is not changed, so it finishes in seconds with no quality loss. This works well in modern players and browsers for containers that support rotation metadata, such as MP4 and MOV. Some formats like WebM and MKV do not support rotation metadata, and some older software may ignore the flag. In those cases, use Compatible mode, which re-encodes the video with the rotation applied directly to every frame. It takes longer and involves a small quality trade-off from re-encoding, but guarantees the video plays correctly on every device, editor and platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rotate a video online for free?

Drop or select your video file on this page. Use the rotation buttons to rotate 90 degrees left, 90 degrees right, or 180 degrees. A live preview shows the result immediately. Click Apply Rotation and download the result. Everything runs in your browser - no upload, no signup, no cost.

Why is my video sideways or upside down?

Most phones record video in landscape by default and store the orientation as metadata. If a player does not read this metadata, the video appears sideways or upside down. This tool fixes the orientation by either updating the metadata or re-encoding the video with the correct rotation baked in.

What is the difference between Fast and Compatible mode?

Fast mode writes the rotation as a metadata flag. It is near-instant and lossless, but some older players may not read the flag. Compatible mode re-encodes the video with the rotation baked into the pixels, so it works everywhere but is slower. If you need to flip the video, Compatible mode is used automatically since flipping requires re-encoding.

Can I flip a video horizontally or vertically?

Yes. Use the Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical buttons to mirror the video. Flipping always requires re-encoding (Compatible mode) since it cannot be expressed as a simple metadata flag. You can combine rotation and flip in a single operation.

Will rotating a video reduce its quality?

In Fast mode, there is no quality loss because the video is not re-encoded. In Compatible mode, the video is re-encoded at high quality, so any quality difference is minimal. For most uses, the output is visually identical to the original.

What video formats can I rotate?

VidShift supports all common video formats: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, OGV, M4V, and MPEG-TS. In Fast mode, the output format matches the input. In Compatible mode, you can choose between MP4, WebM, or MKV.

How do I fix a video filmed in portrait on a phone?

Upload the video and check the live preview. If it appears sideways, click Rotate 90 Left or Rotate 90 Right until it looks correct. Then click Apply Rotation. Use Compatible mode if you want the rotation to work in all players. You can also trim the video to remove unwanted sections or change the playback speed after fixing the orientation.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files never leave your device. VidShift has no backend servers that receive or store your media. All processing runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly, ensuring complete privacy. The tool even works offline after your first visit.
